Ethical Guidelines
The Academy of Music in Arnhem wishes to be a place where mutual respect, trust, and consideration are exercised in the best judgment. We strive to be an open and collaborative community, aware of the way we communicate and interact with each other. We’ve developed this tentative set of ethical guidelines to guide our practice:
● Show respect for each other’s identity, ethnicity, gender, class, nationality and outlook on life.
● Pay attention to the position, status and power you have in relation to others, in & outside the classroom.
● Bullying is unacceptable, including behaviors such as physical intimidation and harmful gossiping.
● Avoid behavior that can be seen or experienced as exclusive, hurtful or offensive to individuals and groups.
● Any remarks, jokes, or intimate questions about colleagues or students’ personal, physical or gendered appearance that may be perceived as hurtful is unacceptable, even if it is meant innocent or humorous.
● Any remarks, gestures or other actions about body or privacy, intimate or sexual touch that may be hurtful or make people feel unsafe or denigrated are unacceptable, even if it is meant innocent or humorous.
● If you experience or notice anything that is in conflict with these guidelines, you can raise this with someone you trust, probably your student career coach (SLB), your head of department, the student counsellor and/or the confidential counsellor (vertrouwenspersoon).
This is a dynamic document that explicitly encourages discussion among students, teachers, and other staff. Based on these conversations, the guidelines will continue to reflect what we as a community understand to be sound ways of sharing and living together. We therefore invite everyone to join the conversation, and we will also actively bring the guidelines to the attention of everyone involved, including our representative bodies.
