Preface

With the elective one-to-one teaching you will expand your practical teaching skills with your instrument. This elective allows you to apply the knowledge, ideas and skills gained during your education and methodology classes in practice. You will teach a motivated (fellow) student at ArtEZ. As an one-to-one learning student, you will expand your practical skills on a specific instrument/topic. This traineeship manual gives you an overview of all the information you need.

If you have any questions, please contact the supervisor (methodology teacher) in your schedule.

We would like to wish you a good and successful traineeship!

In behalf of all methodology teachers,

Aljosja Buijs

Education Courses Coordinator in Arnhem

One-to-one teaching assignment

The aim of this traineeship is to apply and test the knowledge, ideas and skills gained during your education and methodology classes in supervised practical cases.

The traineeship comprises the following activities:

The traineeship begins with an introductory class taught by your traineeship supervisor. Your supervisor will explain all the steps of the traineeship and you will make arrangements for traineeship visits by your methodology teacher.

The first class of your traineeship will be an introduction to map the initial situation of your student and to make arrangements concerning class hours and duration. You should choose a fixed time for all teaching weeks.

After making a global plan for the 23-class cycle, you will start teaching. The traineeship follows a programme established together with your student and your supervisor.

The traineeship concludes with a final meeting with your supervisor.

Introduction class

At the start of the school year your traineeship supervisor (methodology teacher) will organise an introduction class. Other attendees of this class may be the other students your teacher will supervise, as well as the students who you will be teaching. The questions addressed during this class are as follows:

Important: after every class, send your lesson form for that class to your supervisor so that they are always up to date on the process.

Step 1: describing the initial situation

Describe your student’s

Describe your own

In general, describe your requirements for the classroom and the classes with regard to

Step 2: Drawing up a global year plan

What do you want to work on

One student might need help with their technique, another with composition or improvisation. Below is a list of the topics you can choose to concentrate on.

Topics:

When making this global plan, describe what you want to achieve during the classes, how you plan to achieve it, and what material you intend to use. Discuss the plan with your supervisor as well as with your student. The more concrete your objectives, the easier it is to see whether you have achieved them at the end of the traineeship. It is possible to change your objectives after you have started: write about this in your final report and explain why you changed your objectives.

Step 3: Creating a learning line

To create a learning line, use the form below. Write a personal evaluation immediately after each class and send the form to your supervisor. At the end of your traineeship, collect these evaluations and add them to your traineeship portfolio.

Learning line form

(Complete a form after every class)

Teacher and student names:

Date:

What did you work on? In the lesson, we worked on the following topics:

Learning line development Name strong & working points

Program next lesson  (What is the content of the classes? Describe the activities for the students and the steps you, the teacher, will take.)

Exercises for the students /Homework for the student

Personal evaluation (Personal points of attention after the class. What did you learn, what do you want to improve/change for the next class?)

Step 4: Interim and final evaluation

After your teacher has visited your traineeship class, you will discuss the class with your teacher. Your student will also be present. Your teacher will complete a report form and give you a copy: add that form to your traineeship portfolio.

At the end of your traineeship, write an evaluation of one to two A4 pages (350 to 700 words), in which you look back on your traineeship period. Reflect on the traineeship as a whole, the student, the supervisor and yourself. Indicate whether you have achieved your objectives and in what ways you have grown. Add this evaluation to your traineeship portfolio.

Step 5: Preparing a traineeship portfolio (for 121 teaching) / reflection-report (for 121 Learning)

121 Teaching:

At the end of your traineeship period, prepare a traineeship portfolio comprising the following chapters. You hand over this portfolio in Leerpodium:

  1. A description of the initial situation
  2. A global year plan
  3. Your lesson forms: a learning line form for every class
  4. The 4 reports of your supervisor
  5. Your final evaluation (350-700 words)

121Learning:

To complete your elective One-to-one learning you have to write a reflection-report of a minimum of 500 words. You hand over this report in Leerpodium.

In your reflection-report you have to reflect on the following subjects:

  1. The content of the lessons.
  2. Which material has been used.
  3. Your personal progress regarding the instrumental/vocal scales.
  4. The objectives you accomplished
  5. Your remaining objectives for the future
  6. Feedback on your teacher and the lessons

Next to that: name all the dates of the lessons.

Step 6: Final traineeship meeting

The traineeship concludes with a final meeting with your supervisor, preferable on the last lesson. The supervisor will give the final feedback. As a student-teacher you can take the feedback into account and use it for your last evaluation.

Submit the completed traineeship portfolio on Leerpodium. This is for 121 TEACHERS AND 121 LEARNERS!

Your supervisor’s assessment will be registered by the education office, and on a pass, your credits will be added to Osiris.

For supervisors: both 121-teachers as learners will be assessed!
