Acquiring a broad understanding of the dramaturgical and artistic side of composing and arranging for film and theatre, with an emphasis on theatre / live performing arts.

The main subject modules.

Basic elements of theatre and film (cinematography, mise en scene, editing, sound, music).
Basics of Storyforming-Storytelling.
Discover the core message of a film or theatre production.
Understanding of the scene in context of the whole story.
Understanding of emotional content of a scene / the whole film or theatre production.
Mechanisms of action of picture/music.
Sequence analysis (stylistic, creative means of the entire film / theatre play explained on a representative scene).
Film/Theatre history (brief glimpse).
Correlation of formal/cinematic/theatre means with content related aspects.

Group lessons that, depending on the composition of the group, take place entirely on-campus, entirely online or in a combination of both, i.e., that there are attendees both physically in the classroom and virtually via a screen. Online attendees communicate by seeing, talking and listening to each other and the on-campus attendees equally. The teacher has access to a whiteboard, application sharing, desktop sharing and document sharing and can hand this privilege to any other participants.
Apart from the video conference a high quality stereo audio stream is open at the same time via source connect. That way students and instructor can listen to music from any source of the group and talk about it simultaneously.
All online lessons are recorded and though available for students later on.

Analysis of the dramaturgical side of interdisciplinary compositions including historical, as well as recent, music theatre productions in The Netherlands and elsewhere. Western and non-western instrumentation, different approaches to storytelling in different cultures through music and text.
Handouts, scores, books chosen by the teacher, representative film and theatre scenes, visuals, etc.

Assessment by the main subject instructor at the end of each semester.

Students should have mastered the elements described under Content.

The student has completed this module if being awarded a minimum grade of 5.5 at the end of the second semester.

At the end of both semesters the instructor fills out an assessment form designed specifically for this module. Assessment is comprised of a verbal evaluation and a concluding grade. Assessment at the end of the autumn semester is formative and expressed in terms of satisfactory/unsatisfactory. It indicates a student's progress in this module. No ECs are awarded and there is no resit. Modules can only be absolved, and ECs awarded, after the end of the spring semester.
Tests conducted online are valid only if it is done without interruption. The assessor will decide whether or not the test was valid.
