Aims
Developing a broad understanding and insight into opera and the experience in the opera hall, itself. Gaining an understanding of the history of opera as well as its aesthetics. Meeting makers and other professionals in their work surroundings. Learning how to write about an opera experience, using critical vocabulary and observations.

History of Classical Music, History of Jazz & Pop Music.
Content
In Opera Werkgroep a group of students will visit approximately 10 productions of the Nationale Opera in Amsterdam and will learn how to write reviews of these opera performances. One time per month the group will also come together to share reviews and reflections and to gain new insights about the genre. Two times per year the students will share their reflections with the artistic director of the Nationale Opera during a discussion.

Group lessons both in Amsterdam (at the opera performances) and in Arnhem. Only live.

Visits to performances*

*No additional costs will be incurred for tickets to performances or rehearsals; however, students must pay for their own transportation to and from the (Amsterdam) opera house.

Assignments throughout the course (reviews, etc.), Active Participation.
Criteria
The student should have attended performances and contributed to discussions and written reviews.
Pass requirements
The student has completed this module if they are awarded a minimum grade of 5.5.
Examination procedure
Any tests conducted online are valid only if they are done without interruption. The assessor will decide whether or not such tests are valid.

Module summary

The student has developed a broad understanding of opera in all its facets and has become acquainted with some of the repertoire. The student knows how to write and speak about opera and music theatre.
