Prerequisites
The student has been admitted to year three or four of Jazz & Pop Arnhem. Exceptions to this rule are subject to approval by the head of department. This module can also be chosen by students of Music Theatre and of Composition for Film & Theatre.
Competencies
Aims
Act Development is the module where students can get hands-on coaching on the practical realities of running an artistic project of their own forming. Students can develop an undertaking attitude, and develop their skills in how to bring artistic vision into reality, working towards a presentation of their work. They can assume different roles in this process, whether it is project leader, ensemble-member, co-creator, and/or other.
Relation to other modules
Act Development is part of the Artistic Practice cluster and relates to all its subjects. In addition, it is closely related to Main Instrument and Ensemble lessons, as well as various elective courses.
Content
Act Development is the new face of the module Band Coaching. The student is coached in the musical and performative aspects of a project of their own creation (or of a fellow student), in the rehearsal space. The students are responsible for running the project independently, the coaches pass by rehearsals to give feedback at given moments. Depending on the nature of the project, the coaching can comprise of a variety of aspects, including performativity, musical skills, interplay skills, genre-specific elements, composition, arrangement, integration of technology, production, and advice on live performance and recording. This module includes recording time (location tbc).

All four courses in the Artistic Practice cluster (APD, Presentation, Act Development and Projects) are assessed together through a single annual portfolio. The portfolio is a living document that makes the student's artistic development visible throughout the year.
Criteria
The portfolio is assessed across five domains. The expected depth and complexity increase with each year.
1) Artistic Direction: does the student pursue a clear and developing artistic inquiry, emerging from their own practice?
2) Experimentation & Process: does the student actively investigate artistic possibilities through variation, iteration and risk-taking?
3) Reflective Awareness: does the student understand and articulate what is happening in their own work?
4) Contextual Awareness: does the student know where their work is situated within a broader artistic or professional context?
5) Articulation & Sharing: is the student's work shared convincingly, with coherence between intention and outcome?
Pass requirements
Active participation, and participation in Birth of Future Music Festival. The student must add a documentation of their work in Act Development in their portfolio, comprising of documentation, reflection, and dialogue with peers and supervisors.
Examination procedure
Act Development is part of the Artistic Practice cluster. The Artistic Practice cluster is assessed by way of a Portfolio comprised by the student. The Portfolio contains materials, reflections, creations, and documentations from all modules that are part of the cluster. The Artistic Cluster Portfolio is passed when the student is awarded a 'pass.'
