Form / content / level

Prerequisites
Admitted to year two, and have either followed Live Electronics 1 or admitted through sending an Ableton project showing competence in using the software. This subject can only be followed on-campus.
Competencies
See Competencies Matrix.
Aims
Expanding on the fundamentals of electronic instruments, and going more in depth into sound design and creating your own instruments, effects and presets. Specialising by finding your own preferred way of using live electronics and developing the specialised skills necessary to use electronics in stage performance in your own unique way.
Relation to other modules
Related to the main subject.
Content
This module builds on Live Electronics 1, but goes into a lot greater depth in using electronics (Effects, Samplers and Synthesizers) in a live setting, mainly
focusing on Ableton Live as a platform for live performance.
After an introduction lesson exploring different ways of using electronics in a live situation, we will alternate between blocks of theory lessons and blocks of putting the theory into practice in small groups. During the course we will go into great depth into the tools available for sounddesign and how you can apply them to playing music live. We will also go more into the technical side of electronic music, discussing and putting to practice concepts as advanced signal flow, modular synthesis, cross-modulation and other more advanced sounddesign concepts.
During the course we will diverge per student into more specialised area’s of live electronics that require undivided attention
During the year we will work towards doing a live electronics performance, which can range from playing covers in a small band setting with a (interactive) backing track, to live-sampling acoustic instruments creating lush soundscapes, to a fully electronic improvisational performance using only MIDI controllers.
