Prerequisites
Students who are admitted to the second year Jazz & Pop or Composing for Film & Theatre. This subject can only be followed on-campus.

Aims
Understanding the fundamentals of sound object creation, including basic electronic sound science, knowledge of basic components and principles of circuitry, and soldering.

Content
In this course we will create DIY sound objects, and learn to engage with soft circuitry, circuit bending, and circuit boards. In the process students will learn some basic electronic sound science, knowledge of basic components and principles of circuitry, and soldering. Elements like LFOs, oscillators, contact microphones, and filters will be studied - knowledge that can inform the student's work with technology in various other contexts.

During the course, the students will create one or more sound objects, which they will be able to use in their own artistic practice.

A central resource for the course will be the seminal work "Handmade Electronic Music" by Nicholas Collins.

Students should have mastered the elements described under Contents.
Pass requirements
The student has completed this module if being awarded a minimum grade of 5.5.

Students are assessed at the end of the module. The assessments comprise evaluations of students' performance during the lessons and on any assignments given.
