Prerequisites
Admitted to the first year Jazz & Pop or Composition for Film and Theatre. This subject can only be followed on-campus.
Please note that this subject is mandatory for Jazz & Pop students and therefore cannot be chosen by them as an elective. Only students Composition for Film and Theatre can include this subject as an elective in their program. And please be aware that most other education subjects have Education as an entry requirement.

Aims
Students acquire the following skills and knowledge:
General awareness of the contours of the teaching profession.
Familiarity with various learning and teaching styles and ability to apply theoretical knowledge.
Awareness of the pros and cons of individual versus group lessons and choosing the appropriate mode(s) of teaching.
Creating lesson plans based on knowledge of the various modes of teaching/learning.
Experience in working with groups and in performing for a group of children at the age of 9-14.
Insight into their own pedagogical talents, interests and ambitions allows students to making reasoned study choices.
Demonstrating their views on education and their own role in the educational process.
Applying all the different learning aims listed above in actual educational settings.
Describing didactic situations (lessons, workshops, coaching sessions) and to assess them critically.
Describing the complete spectrum of a music teacher's responsibilities.

This module provides an introduction to Methodology as well as elective education modules.

Lessons based on the topics listed under Aims, as well as assignments based on the materials discussed, complemented by lectures and workshops about various professional domains.

Examination and assessment

In-class teaching assignments, presentations and written assignments.
Criteria
The completed assignments demonstrate that students have sufficiently mastered the different elements and are able to discuss them adequately.

Pass requirements
The student has completed this module if all assignments are completed and graded "satisfactory", with a minimum class attendance of 80%.
Examination procedure
Completed assignments must be handed in for evaluation via e-mail/Teams/Leerpodium, while presentations are given in class. Assignments are assessed by the teacher.
Resit options
See the Education and Assessment Plan. The resit comprises the assignments which the student has not yet satisfactorily completed.

Module summary

This module is intended to provide students with a general knowledge of the different aspects of teaching. Students begin with an exploration of the educational field, discussing questions such as: Where does music education occur? What does the profession entail? Where can music teachers find employment and what activities and skills are required? Subsequently a number of subjects will be discussed, including but not limited to: learning styles, group lessons, ensemble playing, didactic models and method analysis. The module culminates in a final group assignment focused on all subjects that have been discussed.
