Aims
To develop a theoretical/technical control in odd meters.
To learn how to use the material to make music/improvise on the instrument.
Relation to other modules
Related to Music Theory, Rhythm-lab, Odd meters elective band, main subject of the students.
Content
In this module, the students will study more challenging meters and more advanced rhythmic concepts. In module 2 of this subject, we will be applying many practice methods used in module 1, using new more challenging material. After each small goal is achieved, the students will be asked to demonstrate musical usage of what they learned. This module includes chapters such as:
1)Feeling the new meters
Examples:
Bulgarian groove “Kopanitsa” (11/8)
Turkish groove Aksak Semai (10/8)
Patterns in 9/8, 11/8 and 13/8
2)Converting material we know from 4/4 to the new odd meters
3)Usage of rests, motifs, rhythmic displacement
4)Using Konnokol to help the student understand the subdivisions
5)Using polyrhythms to develop rhythmic freedom
Examples: Playing half time in odd meters with faster tempos, phrasing with the usage of odd note groupings etc.

Group classes with individual meetings at the end of the year.

Any device that makes it possible for the student to send me in written versions and videos/recordings of the assignments.

Examination and assessment

Assessment by the instructor.
Criteria
The students have to demonstrate mastery of the elements described under Contents.
Active participation.
Pass requirements
The student has completed this module if being awarded a minimum grade of 5.5.
Examination procedure
At the end of the first semester the student is awarded a formative grade, which will be expressed as satisfactory/unsatisfactory.
Throughout the second semester, the students will have to hand in 3 assignments (written version and a video/recording) where they demonstrate musical/practical mastery of the elements.
These assignments will be graded.
