Aims
Students acquire the basic skills pertaining to the use of DAW-software.
Relation to other modules
This module is related to theory modules, Composition/Arranging, and Harmony at the Piano.
Content
Students learn to conceptualize their compositions (forms, lead sheet, sounds).
Students learn various techniques pertaining to recording MIDI signals from MIDI devices, e.g., a MIDI piano, which are then processed with sequencing software, e.g., Logic, Cubase, Studio One etc.
Students learn how to fit the materials they have recorded into their arrangement, using various techniques such as quantization, adjusting the different parameters (e.g., volume, length, position), as well as sound and editing.

Material & Tools
Students are required to own a personal laptop (Mac or Windows). They are personally responsible for both hardware and DAW software (Logic, Cubase, or freeware such as Studio One) and failure to keep these functioning may affect the final grade.

Examination and assessment

Mode(s) of assessment
The final assignment comprises a music production built from at least four different MIDI/vst tracks (audio tracks optional, in agreement with instructor), lasting circa two minutes, and comprising two clearly distinct, but integrated sections (A/B part, verse/chorus, etc.).
Criteria
Careful and precise application of the above techniques, as well as mastering the elements described under Aims.
Pass requirements
The student has completed this module if being awarded a minimum grade of 5.5.
