Aims
Learning to interpret and play very complex rhythms from various musical idioms within or related to the jazz, pop and Latin domains.
Building a ready repertoire of two-voice rhythmic fragments.
Developing the ability to improvise over rhythmic models and with cross-rhythms.
Developing polyrhythm.
Relation to other modules
This module is related to the main subject module as well as the theory modules.
Please note that this elective module is included in this module description only out of practical considerations, as its contents are closely linked to the preceding module Rhythm Lab 2.
Content
Notating demonstrated (played and/or sung) monophonic and multi-voice rhythmic fragments.
Goal-note improvisation, in which a number of predetermined elements must be incorporated into an improvisation of four, eight or twelve bars.
Playing two or four bar jazz and Latin rhythms, which shift one eighth note on each repetition.
Playing cross-rhythms in 3/4 and 4/4 alternated with improvisation.
Playing metric modulations (quarter notes to half notes, or triplet quarter notes to regular quarter notes, etc.).
Introduction to Latin music:
Singing clave patterns while playing basic bell patterns, advanced son and 12/8 rhythms and complex rumba rhythms on congas.

Examination and assessment

Mode(s) of assessment
Written assessment by the instructor at the end of the first semester and an exam at the end of the second semester.
Criteria
Students demonstrate their command of the elements described under Content.
Pass requirements
The student has completed this module if being awarded a minimum grade of 5.5. Assessment at the end of the autumn semester is formative and expressed in terms of satisfactory/unsatisfactory. It indicates a student's progress in this module. No ECs are awarded and there is no resit. Modules can only be absolved, and ECs awarded, after the end of the spring semester.
Examination procedure
At the end of the first semester, the teacher gives a written assessment. At the end of the second semester, students take a written and oral exam.
