Form / content / level

Prerequisites
Admitted to the fourth year of the Bachelor's or to the Master's program.
Competencies
See Competencies Matrix.
Aims
Explore cooperation between architects and musicians.
For music it is common knowledge that it affects the emotions. Less widely known is that architecture is also considered to consist of (sequences of) atmospherical spaces that affect us. For some years the masterprogram in Architecture is doing workshops on the theme of sensing and designing atmospheres. After two years of collaboration with students in dance we would like to explore the relations between music and architecture. It is an open question with lots of posibilities for the input from the participating students: where do music and architecture meet in sensing and designing atmospheres?
Relation to other modules
Related to the practical modules and the interdisciplinary project.
Content
The project will be a workshop. This means that some themes and subthemes are laid out by the tutors and experts, and that the students are invited to contibute in a process of artistic research. The collaborative work of the students forms the core of the workshop. In the collaborative work the (sub)themes are analysed, ideas are formulated and new concepts are tested. It is a lot of hands-on activities with both parties starting with their own fields of knowledge and exploring the cross-over to the the other field. The worhshop will be four days. Before there is one day of introductions and getting to know each other. After the workhsop there is a final day with presentation of the results.
For the academic year 2018-2019 the provisional dates are:
Friday, January 11: Introductory Meeting
Wednesday evening, January 16: Start of the Workshop
Thursday, January 17 - Sunday, January 20: Workshop
Saturday morning, January 26: Presentation of the results
Mode(s) of instruction
After the general introduction of the workshop on the starting day, each group of students (a mix of music and architecture) will explore their subtheme. Each group will be coached be a pair of tutors (experts). The groups are not instructed to execute an pre-established program; the groups are invited to find their own most suitable ways of working and explore new areas by collaborating.
Material & Tools
Students produce their own material as a group.
Student activity
See also Modes of instruction. The self-efficacy of the students is the core of this project. The students will spent the days of the workhsops together. They will be working, trying and testing together to find common ground in the field of sounds and spaces.

Examination and assessment

Mode(s) of assessment
Active participation during workshops and final presentation.
Criteria
Students are required to make an active contribution to the project. Active attendance is an explicit pass criterion.
Pass requirements
The student has completed this module if they are graded "satisfactory".
Examination procedure
The two tutors make individual assessments after the workshop and the final presentsation. This is written down on an assessment form. Preferably the completion of the assessment form is supervised by an examinator. The results of the assessment are fed back to the students after the final presentation
Resit options
See the Education and Assessment Plan.
