Form / content / level

Prerequisites
Admitted to second year of Vocal main subject Bachelor phase and the completion of Music Theory 1 Jazz & Pop. This subject can only be followed on-campus.
Competencies
See Competencies Matrix.
Aims
Students learn to translate theoretical knowledge into singing skills. They work on building a ready repertoire of rhythmic, harmonic and melodic concepts common in jazz & pop styles, sight-reading arrangements in various styles, and are introduced to specific kinds of sight-reading.
Relation to other modules
Related to the theory, as well as practical modules.
Content
For singers, TILT’s most important objective is to familiarize them with the way in which theoretical knowledge can be applied to the practice of interpreting songs, improvising and - where necessary - arranging/composing. The recognizing and remembering of structures and melodic and rhythmic building blocks are trained through listening examples, improvisation exercises, transcription assignments and learning to sing from schemes (as bass line, and in patterns and scales, etc.). In addition, we will examine how motifs and licks (both learned and created) can be applied when improvising over songs. Moreover, Tilt Vocals involves an introduction to the various styles of vocal improvisation and students will also work on sound and articulation. The principle for all Tilt assignments (both written and otherwise) is that the student must be able to perform them while singing. Specific topics during the classes:
Roots, broken chords, guiding lines, bass lines. Solos constructed from guiding lines, building a solo. Sight reading. Making new melodies over an existing song. Timing, phrasing in swing and latin.

Examination and assessment

Mode(s) of assessment
At the end of the first semester, the instructor awards a tentative performance-based grade. At the end of the second semester there is a practical exam based on the exercises listed above and assessed by a panel of two teachers. Exam duration: 60 minutes.
Criteria
Students should have mastered the elements described under Contents.
Active Participation.
Pass requirements
The student has completed this module if being awarded a minimum grade of 5.5 at the end of the second semester. Assessment at the end of the autumn semester is formative and expressed in terms of satisfactory/unsatisfactory. It indicates a student's progress in this module. No ECs are awarded and there is no resit. Modules can only be absolved, and ECs awarded, after the end of the spring semester.
Examination procedure
Students are assessed at the end of both semesters. The end-of-semester assessments comprise evaluations of students' performance during the lessons.
Resit options
See the Education and Assessment Plan.
