Form / content / level

Prerequisites
Admitted to year two of JPA. This subject can only be followed on-campus.
Competencies
See Competencies Matrix.
Aims
Learn about the different kinds of pedals and effects, and on how to effectively build your FX chain to reach the sounds you have in your mind.
Relation to other modules
Related to Music Technology & Music Production
Content
This module introduces students to the creative possibilities of effects pedals in a musical context. Students will explore common audio effects — such as distortion, modulation, delay, and reverb — and learn how these tools can shape and transform the sound of instruments or the voice.

A central focus of the module is understanding how the order of effects and signal routing influences the resulting sound. Through demonstrations and listening examples, students will discover how different pedal combinations can dramatically change the character of a sound.

We will also discuss how to build and organize a pedalboard and what to consider when combining multiple pedals. In the hands-on part of the lessons, students will work in pairs, experimenting with different pedal setups and exploring sounds together by alternating between playing and knob twisting.
Mode(s) of instruction

Material & Tools
Would be beneficial to the lesson if all the students can bring their pedalboards, or pedals, to have a collection of pedals to try out
